Beautiful hike with magnificent views, from Merishausen to Hagenturm and back again to Merishausen.
We start our hike at the car park on an asphalt path and follow the blue signpost "Rundwanderweg" (Round Trip), past the church.
We continue on the asphalted way for approximately one kilometre and then turn left on a gravel path. We follow the blue signposts. After a short walk in the open fields we briefly go through the woods and then reach a junction. After the junction we leave the blue signposts leading the round trip and turn right. The path leads us up into the forest.
We stay in the forest and further on, after a left bend reach a gravel track, which we continue up on the right. At one place the trail turns left, from here on we follow the brown "Rundwanderweg" signs. Here the trail goes in a straight line and is rather steep.
After a tiring ascent we reach a meadow. Here we continue following the brown arrow, which leads us to a gravel lane heading towards the right. After approx. 500 metres, at an ascending lane, we follow on the left the brown "Rundwanderweg" resp. the yellow "Wanderweg" (hiking trail) signposts.
At a bench we again reach the edge of the forest and hike from there after the hiking trail signpost 20 metres in the left direction, till a yellow sign "Hagen" is seen. Following this past a house with a football area, cross the gravel lane and carry on on the hiking trail till the end of the forest. At the forest's edge you will see the yellow sign (879 m) "Hagenturm 10 Min." and further on the Hagenturm will soon come into view.
It is well worth climbing the 220 steps up to the platform at the Hagenturm, where you can enjoy unique panoramic views, especially in good weather. Tired after the strenuous ascent, we can enjoy a rest on the big meadow and grill a Cervelat (popular Swiss sausage) at one of the numerous barbecue sites.
Strengthened and ready to go again, after the visit to Hagenturm including a picnic on the way, we continue back the way we came till the forest corner. Here go along the forest's edge, in the direction of "Bargen-Vorderer Randen". At the next junction, at a meadow, the hike continues following the brown arrow, in the direction of Bargen. Further on we do not turn right, the shortcut to Merishausen, but instead we walk straight on and shortly after will see a hiking trail sign "Merishausen".
The way leads us now through fields up to a patch of pines, where we continue straight on in the direction of Merishausen.
Back in the forest we walk down a winding road and at the next bend leave the paved path heading towards the valley. Since the way is barely visible here, we make sure we follow the brown "Round Trip" and the yellow "Hiking Trail" signs.
The hike continues in the bottom of the valley, part of the way along the forest edge, and leads further down onto an asphalted path, that we follow right down. Heading on downhill in the direction of the brown signs "Rundwanderweg" after a short stretch we reach a patch of walnut trees, where you will see the sign "Merishausen 20 Min". We follow this sign on the right and turn left again after approx. 40 metres. After a short while we will see the starting point and the Merishausen church tower.
The last few metres lead us through the village, where we go to a restaurant for a drink before heading home.
