Christian Beck - Munot Guardian.
Secret local tips: Christian Beck - our Munot guardian reveals what he loves about Schaffhausen, including the cosiest nooks and crannies so visitors feel right at home the moment they arrive in Schaffhausen.
«My roots are in Schaffhausen. During the many years I lived overseas, it always had a special place in my heart. My wife and I are the current guardians of the Munot, a 16th-century circular fortress.
Music is one of my passions. I play an instrument and love to attend concerts at the Kammgarn cultural centre or the open-air festival Stars in Town, which is held in the heart of the Old Town. In summer, I enjoy the hustle and bustle up at the Munot – from the children’s festival to open-air cinema and the Munot’s eight traditional balls, it is one event after the next.
If I fancy a change of scenery, I go to Rhybadi. The beautiful wooden pool has been the place to go for a swim in Schaffhausen for more than 140 years. Luckily, the complex has always been carefully and sympathetically restored in keeping with the original architecture. I love to just drift off in this river pool, which incidentally has spectacular views of the Munot.
When I go out for the night, it is usually to the Haberhaus or Güterhof. The former is a beautiful medieval granary, which now harbours a restaurant, bar and culture club with an interesting line-up. The Güterhof sits directly below the Munot on the banks of the Rhine. The former warehouse not only serves good food, it’s also a great place to spend an entertaining evening.»
