History
The first illumination of the Rhine Falls with a fireworks display took place in 1857 on the occasion of the inauguration of the Rhine Falls train from Winterthur to Schaffhausen. However, due to inclement weather only part of the fireworks were fired. The famous hotelier, Franz Wegenstein, liked the idea of this spectacle and continued it in the following years. Thus during the heyday of tourism at the Rhine Falls he organised regular Bengal illumination, in order to offer something exceptional for the guests of the Grandhotel Schweizerhof.
