St. George's Convent Museum

Stein am Rhein

Stein am Rhein

St. George's, the former Benedictine abbey, is one of the best-preserved monasteries of Switzerland.
The abbey comprises of the enclosure building, where you will find a chapter house, the winter and summer refectory, the cloister, a dormitory, the abbots' parlours, a celebration hall and the abbot's chapel.

There is also a guest house and various ecumenical buildings on these premises that can also be viewed.

Of particular importance are the late Gothic cloister and the so-called celebration hall, erected by the last abbot of St. George's, David von Winkelsheim. Here you will find the most important, still existing fresco paintings north of the Alps dating back to around 1500.

The former abbey premises now belong to the Gottfried Keller Foundation.
